Safari Etiquette: An Essential Guide
Aggressive tourism is now a worldwide phenomenon, a situation highlighted in a 2023 article in the New York Times, prompted by chaotic scenes in the Masai Mara National Reserve when two male cheetahs chased and killed a wildebeest calf. They were quickly surrounded by a throng of safari vehicles, with guides and visitors showing a woeful disregard for the well being of the cheetahs in their rush to get close and capture “the shot”. This prompted Jonathan and Angela, through their non-profit Sacred Nature Initiative, to partner with Narok County Government to roll out a Safari Etiquette, a protocol to help ensure that guides and visitors are sensitised to how they can lessen the impact of their presence on wildlife. A vital element of this eBook is to encourage the proper briefing of all guests before they embark on their first game drive, by providing a set of guidelines that everyone can understand.
This is essential in an age where Social Media is both a major contributor to nature tourism and photography, and a direct and indirect disturbance to wildlife. Simply collecting a catalogue of “selfies” as proof that you were there, risks all of us becoming tourism’s “paparazzi”. The aim of this eBook is to encourage a sense of awe and respect for nature, rather than simply viewing our spectacular natural heritage as little more than a source of entertainment, experienced on our smart phones and through our telephoto lenses.

Think before reaching for your camera. Ask yourself, “are my actions going to interfere or endanger the wellbeing of my subject”.
Whether you choose to watch in awe and amazement through your binoculars or pick up your camera to record your experience, our goal is to show you how to get the best out of your safari adventure while respecting the wildlife.
In this Ebook you will learn about:
-
How to choose the best tented camp or lodge for your specific needs, ensuring the right safari vehicle for photography, and a professional guide to ensure the success of your safari.
-
Getting the most out of a big cat sighting: don’t get too close, watch your animal subject to see if you are making it nervous, be particularly careful around mothers with young, don’t follow behind a predator that is trying to hunt and risk alerting its prey
-
Listen carefully to your guide, follow their instructions, but don’t be frightened to ask them not to get closer or follow an animal that is moving with young or trying to hunt.
-
Learn all you can before you arrive in Africa for your safari adventure, particularly the behaviour of the large charismatic animals that visitors most want to see. Don’t rush from one sighting to another trying to see “everything”. That is impossible. Instead, spend quality time at a sighting, sitting quietly watching and learning about the animals or birds you are watching.
And so much more!
